ON DEPTH as an optical illusion.
Consider the optical illusion of putting 2-3 two-dimensional triangles together. When negative space is introduced at the border of the triangles, a new three dimensional space is created by the combination of the two dimensional objects and their relation to the negative space between them. In this instance figure 1 is two dimensional. Figure 2 creates a fixed foreground effect and Z Axis to the mind. And figure 3 creates simultaneously a concave and convex perception of depth. It is the space where negative lines meet and the contrast between negative and positive space that creates a new dimension.
Without the negative space, multiple triangles put together simply creates a larger triangle or polygon that remains two dimensional.
